For the Alphabeastiary: [link]

The Ijiraq (Eye-yee-rock) is a shapeshifter from Inuit mythology.
It kidnaps children and makes adult hunters lose their way. It can take any form it wishes, most commonly appearing as an Arctic Hare, Polar Bear, Raven or a Tariaksuq (a monster with a Caribou's head and a man's body).

This is my take on the Ijiraq, appearing as a Tariaksuq. I decided it would be cool if he had a weapon, so I made one for him. It's an axe made out of half a polar bear jawbone and a polar bear femur, bound together with sinew.

About one week, from start to finish. Chavant Le Beau Touche plastilene over an aluminum wire armature. This guy is a sketch and is as finished as he will get because of the type of clay I used, but I am pretty sure that I will do a version of him in Sculpey because I really enjoyed creating this design and would like to be able to refine and paint this character.

Not sure of dimensions, but probably about a foot tall, give or take an inch or two.

Mature content 'cuz of the nudity and anatomy visible in a few of the shots.

Awesome sculpture. You have certainly captured the ominous nature of the creature. I can't wait to see the finished piece.

This is beautiful.
I love the pose and the anatomy in this. I think the human body with the caribou head fits lovely together too, especially with the way he's holding down his head like that and dangling his arms.

Thanks! I'm about to start on a polymer clay version of this, so I can add more detail and paint it. Should be fun!

OOh, I love the mythology of this creature, though I've only ever seen it spelled Ijiraat; your sculpture is amazing, great work!

very interesting creature! :> love that native American mythology! one of my favorites sort of similar is the skinwalker, sort of like a werewolf but much much more consciously evil D:

I really like the slight head tilt, along with the lunging posture...
...it gives the viewer the perception of swaying object...
...and it makes it look like it's sniffing out prey too (especially those first 2 shots).
This would make a great companion piece to your 'Black Rabbit' sculpture.
Awesome work!

Thanks! :)
It's funny you should mention this being a companion to the Black Rabbit, since I was actually thinking the same thing. They'd look neat side-by-side, I think.

Nice sculpt! He gives off a little bit of a creepy otherworldly vibe, even though the idea of a guy with an elk's head should just be silly. ;) But his stance pulls it off! great work.
